What is a forward deployed engineer?

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly with a customer to make a product work inside that customer's systems. Today that mostly means AI: taking an agent or model from a demo to production on the customer's data, tools and security rules. The title comes from Palantir, and AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic now hire for it at scale.

What FDEs do all week

Find the real problem

Sit with the customer's team, learn how the work is actually done, and turn a vague "we want AI" into one workflow worth automating.

Build the agent

Prompts, tools, evals and the glue code around the model. Often with Claude Code or a similar coding agent doing a lot of the typing.

Connect it to their systems

APIs, databases, internal tools, SSO and permissions. MCP servers are now a common way to give the agent safe access.

Debug it in their environment

The customer's data is messier than the demo's. Most of the job is making the thing work on their infrastructure, not yours.

Get it through review

Security, compliance and the people who will use it every day. An FDE answers their questions and fixes what they find.

Feed it back to product

What broke at the customer becomes a feature request or a fix in the core product, so the next deployment is easier.

The skills, and where to practise them

Most of what an FDE ships today is agent work: wiring a model into real tools, making it reliable, and getting it past a customer's review. Every one of these has a page on this site.

How to become a forward deployed engineer

  1. 1

Get very good at building with AI

Ship real things with coding agents, MCP and evals, not just chat. The skills section above is a good checklist.

  2. 2

Build something for a real user

An internal tool for a team, a small client project, an open source integration. FDE hiring managers look for proof you made something work for someone else.

  3. 3

    Practise the customer side

Explaining trade-offs, scoping, saying no. Write up what you built and why, the way you would for a customer.

  4. 4

    Prepare for the FDE interview

Expect a practical build, a customer role-play and system design. FDE interview questions

Frequently asked questions

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

A forward deployed engineer works directly with a customer to make a product work inside that customer's systems. In AI companies this usually means building and deploying agents on the customer's own data and tools, then fixing whatever breaks in their environment.

How much does a forward deployed engineer make?

Across 579 US-dollar job postings on Top FDE Jobs (October 27, 2026), the median posted base pay is about $203k a year, and the top 10% of postings start at about $285k. Equity is not included.

Which companies hire forward deployed engineers?

Palantir, where the title started, is still the largest. OpenAI, Databricks, Anthropic, Scale AI and many AI startups also hire FDEs. Top FDE Jobs currently lists 982 open roles at 322 companies.

Is a forward deployed engineer the same as a solutions engineer?

No. A solutions engineer mostly works before the sale, on demos and proofs of concept. A forward deployed engineer works after it, writing production code in the customer's stack until the deployment is live and used.

Do I need a computer science degree to become an FDE?

Job postings mostly ask for proven engineering experience and customer-facing skills. Shipped projects that work for real users matter more than the degree itself.

Are forward deployed engineer jobs remote?

Some are. About 15% of current postings on Top FDE Jobs are fully remote; most are hybrid or on site, because the job involves time with customers.
